Remember to be funny: An interview with Adam Wade

Storyteller Adam Wade wastes no time announcing he’s from New Hampshire. It’s his way to alert audiences that he’s a little different for New York City, despite living here 11 years … he’s nice. That affability has made him a force at the storytelling slams organized by The Moth. He’s won 15 times in six years, including two GrandSlams.

Wade came to New York to be a NBC page, turning that humble start into regular appearances on ESPN Classics and Comedy Central’s “Tough Crowd.” But his monthly one-man show at Theatre Under St. Marks is most reminiscent of his Moth appearances. The show is a blend of storytelling and video that not only leaves you laughing, but also makes you think about the power of memory and the emotions it evokes. (Mainly it’s funny, just to be clear.) “The Adam Wade From New Hampshire Show: Tales of Life, Love and Little League” continues this Monday at 7 p.m. and runs the second Monday of each month throughout 2010.

The pairing of indie rock and spoken word enjoyed a vogue in the Nineties; not so much anymore. But the two arts were happily reacquainted on Sunday at an afternoon performance at Maxwell’s entitled “Neighborhood Evolution Through Story And Song.”

Writer and spoken word performer Adam Wade, a Hoboken resident for the past seven years, had the crowd in stitches with a hilarious story about being heartbroken and then meeting a cute girl in a Hoboken bar who walked him home; the simple words “it gave me hope” never got a bigger laugh.

On a night in early-January when the wind chill in New York City is 10 degrees below zero, three dozen frozen bodies descended the dirty, dingy steps at the Theater Under St. Mark’s in the East Village. With brick walls, concrete floors and exposed pipes, the small room looked more like a storm cellar than a performance space.

They’re here to hear Adam Wade. He personally greets each audience member, opens additional folding chairs as seating quickly vanishes. More than 40 people paid $5 to see the inaugural “The Adam Wade From New Hampshire Show” — two hours of an entertainment smorgasbord.

Lean out a window with a pillow under your chest and see a guy in a T-shirt running up a fire escape with a TV under his arm! Hurdle an air shaft on a roof just to feel your heart pound on the outside of your chest… or sit on a stoop.

Adam Wade has lived around Ninth Street in Hoboken since 2003 and says he jumped at the opportunity to appear in a neighborhood-themed show. Wade has been enjoying a prolonged run of success on the NYC storytelling scene.

He is a two-time Grand SLAM winner at the Moth, a Manhattan venue that is widely regarded as the Major Leagues of live storytelling, and he credits the memorable personalities in his neighborhood with providing a textured background for some of his yarns.

"I'm proud to say that I know Georgie at Willow St. Grocery, Tony and the crew at Torna Pizza, Dwight at Josh and Ive's, all the guys at Lisa's Deli, and

Cathy at CVS on Willow," Wade says. "These good people are the ones who often take center stage when I tell a story about where I live."

The Adam Wade From New Hampshire Show is here and promises to be something you don't want to miss. The show opens with one of a rotating pool of great storytellers in New York City. They will tell a wonderful, fifteen-minute original story. Then Adam Wade will greet the audience and for the next forty-five minutes he'll tell a few stories from his adolescent years, sing a song or two on the guitar, and play videos and rare home movies. No two shows will be the same. Adam promises the people a variety of ways to experiment what stories he'll be telling such as theme, luck and sheer randomness to keep them coming to the show month after month.

This great show will give the audience a chance to see Adam Wade combine music and video to his Moth winning (and tested) stories. They will also hear longer sets from some of their favorite storytellers in the city.
